Magnificent Monday!!

Today we began the day deciding our song for the Christmas concert. Students are asked to review the video and practice the dance moves.

We are very excited to learn this new dance!!

Next, we moved onto Math. We learned about exponents today.

When numbers are repeated in multiplication, we can write them in exponent form

For example, we can write 2x2x2x2 as 2 to the power of 4
2 is the base
4 is the exponent
2 to the power of 4 is the power

We say 2 to the power of 4 or 2 to the 4th

2 fourth is the power of 2

The exponent of a number says how many times to use that number in a multiplication.

It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number.

In this example: 82 = 8 × 8 = 64
(The exponent "2" says to use the 8 two times in a multiplication.)

Another example: 53 = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125

We played exponent tic tac toe in partners to better understand exponents.

Next, we had French.

Then we worked on our electric cars for science fair.

After first recess and lunch we began our book report for The City of Ember. First, we reviewed how to go about using a graphic organizer when writing a summary for a book. We were reminded that we only use the important events in our graphic organizer. We think about how the story ended and all the events that led to the resolution/end of story. We also need to ensure that our events connect from one event to the next.

Next, we had Music.

When we returned, we continued working on our graphic organizer.

After second recess and lunch we began our new UOI unit on flight. We discussed the central idea and the lines of inquiry and matched up the key concepts to the lines of inquiry.

·      central idea
Air has many properties that can be used for flight and for other purposes.
Lines of inquiry and key concepts:
·     The properties of air (Form)
·      The shapes that produce lift (Function)
·      Societal and environmental impacts of flying devices that make use of the properties of air (Causation)

We then work in groups to look up the word ‘flight’ and ‘air’ in the dictionary and came up with an agreed upon definition for both terms. We then worked in our groups to brainstorm what we know about flight and air. We used these ideas to create our KWL chart for this unit. We also used this information to pose questions about our new UOI:

Homework:
1.    Read for 20 minutes
2.    Writing due Monday (story about if kids rules the world)
3.    Math sheets (exponents, GCF and LCM)
4.    Math test Monday
5.    Flight test next Tuesday

6.    Graphic organizer due tomorrow
